What a Standard Service Actually Includes

Airsoft replicas contain moving components, seals, electrical contacts and adjustment points that gradually wear, loosen or become contaminated through normal use. A service is intended to catch those problems before they become failures, restore suitable lubrication and confirm that the replica is still operating as it should.
It should not simply mean opening the gearbox, covering everything in grease and closing it again.
Start With a Baseline
Before dismantling anything, it is useful to understand how the replica currently behaves.
Where appropriate, that can include basic functional testing and chronograph readings to establish current power and consistency.
Having a baseline also provides something meaningful to compare against once the service is complete.
Inspection
The replica is inspected for visible wear, damage, loose components and other signs that something may require attention.
Inside an AEG gearbox, this can include examining gears, bearings or bushings, piston components, compression parts, tappet components and the general condition of the mechanism.
The exact inspection depends on the platform and what can reasonably be accessed during the agreed service.
Cleaning
Old lubricant can collect dust, debris and material from normal wear.
Components are cleaned where necessary so their condition can be properly assessed and fresh lubrication is not simply being applied on top of contaminated material.
The inner barrel and accessible parts of the hop system may also be cleaned where appropriate.
Lubrication
Different areas of a replica require different amounts and types of lubrication.
The objective is sufficient lubrication to reduce unnecessary friction and wear without flooding components with grease or oil.
More lubricant is not automatically better.
Compression Checks
Where relevant, compression components are checked for obvious leakage, damage or deterioration.
A service does not automatically mean replacing seals or compression components, but significant problems discovered during inspection should be identified and discussed.
Shimming and Motor Setup
On an AEG, gear shimming and motor height may be checked where appropriate.
Incorrect adjustment can contribute to excessive noise, unnecessary wear and inefficient operation.
Again, the aim is not adjustment for the sake of adjustment. If the setup is already correct, it should not be disturbed simply because the gearbox is open.
Hop and Barrel Inspection
The hop rubber, nub, barrel and chamber can have a major influence on practical shooting performance.
A service provides an opportunity to check their condition, cleanliness and stability.
Damage or poor setup can then be identified before assuming a gearbox problem is responsible for inconsistent performance.
Reassembly and Testing
Once servicing is complete, the replica should be reassembled and tested rather than simply handed back because the gearbox successfully closed.
Functional testing confirms that the system operates correctly, while chronograph and consistency checks can help demonstrate whether the replica is performing normally.
Servicing Is Not the Same as Repairing
A standard service is preventative maintenance.
If inspection reveals a broken gear, damaged piston, failing electronic component, air leak or another fault requiring replacement parts or significant additional labour, the job has moved beyond routine servicing.
That additional work should be explained and approved rather than quietly appearing on the final bill.
When Should a Replica Be Serviced?
There is no universal servicing interval because replicas experience very different workloads.
Usage, environment, internal configuration, power level and component quality all affect how quickly maintenance becomes necessary.
Changes in sound, consistency, efficiency or general behaviour can be more useful indicators than servicing purely because a particular number of months has passed.
