Why Is My AEG’s FPS Inconsistent?

Inconsistent FPS is one of those faults that looks simple until you start chasing it. A replica can appear to fire normally while small problems in compression, nozzle timing, hop setup, ammunition or feeding quietly pull the velocity around from shot to shot. The key is working out which part of the system is actually responsible before replacing anything.

Start With the Pattern

Before opening the replica, look at what the inconsistency is actually doing. A steady rise or fall, occasional low shots, wide random variation and changes linked to magazine position can all point toward different causes. The shape of the problem is often more useful than the average FPS number on its own.

Check the Simple Things First

Before assuming the gearbox needs to come apart, rule out the easy variables. Use good-quality BBs of a consistent weight, test with a known-good magazine, make sure the hop setting is stable, and check that the battery, gas supply or HPA pressure is behaving normally. A surprising number of “internal” faults turn out to be something happening outside the gearbox.

Compression Problems

If the external variables are stable, inconsistent compression becomes a likely suspect. Air can leak past the piston head, cylinder head, nozzle or hop rubber, and even a small loss can produce noticeable variation from shot to shot. The important part is identifying where the seal is failing rather than replacing every compression component at once.

Nozzle Timing & Feeding

The nozzle has to return to the same position and feed each BB consistently for the air seal to behave predictably. Worn tappet components, timing issues, poor nozzle fit or inconsistent magazine feeding can all create erratic velocity without producing an obvious mechanical failure. This is why feeding behaviour and FPS consistency should be looked at together rather than treated as completely separate problems.

Hop & Barrel Influence

The hop system can also introduce variation, particularly if the bucking is damaged, contaminated, poorly seated or being affected by inconsistent nozzle contact. A dirty inner barrel can add another variable. Neither automatically means the hop or barrel needs replacing, but both should be checked before deeper internal work is considered.

Look at the Results, Not Just the Parts

A good diagnosis should end with evidence. Chronograph testing, consistency figures and repeatable feeding behaviour are more useful than simply knowing which parts were changed. If the replica becomes more consistent after the work, the numbers should show it. If they do not, the diagnosis is not finished.

When to Stop Diagnosing and Start Repairing

Once the cause has been narrowed down with reasonable confidence, the repair should target that fault rather than turning into a shopping list of replacement parts. That usually means less cost, fewer unnecessary changes and a much clearer way to judge whether the work actually solved the problem.
